THE "DAY OF THE LORD" IS WHEN JEHOVAH BEGINS HIS RULE "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away… and the elements * will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up… But according to His promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." (From 2 Peter 3:10 & 13 RSV).
The authoritative presence of the
"Day of God" and the arrival
of His Son The Christ Michael
"like a thief"
will not be a literal day, but will
be a period of one year. (2 Peter 3:12 RSV).
(For the principle, see Ezekiel 4:6). As the prophesied events of the
"Lord's day" unfold, they will be
recognized by those who have kept their senses with regard to the fulfilment of
the seven "trumpets" and seven "bowls" of the anger
of God. (Rev 1:10)
(Rev 8:6 to 11:19)
(Rev 16:1-21).
We know that the "Day of the
Lord" could not arrive until after the final apostate rebellion
against God, when wickedness in human form was revealed. (2 Thess 2:1 As has already been explained, the calamities of the first four "bowls" of the anger of God have already taken place on earth. (See Pages 2/11/85A and 2/11/85B). The seventh and last anger of God "upon the air" will be effective within the spirits of the sons of disobedience that are under the control of the ruler of this "darkness". (Eph 2:1,2) (Eph 6:12 NEB. Rev 16:17-21). The anger of God will be poured out upon the elemental* evil spirits and works of mankind, such that man-made teachings and evil traditions of the unGodly will be "burned up" on the "Day of the Lord" by the Spirit "fire" of the Lord's Judgement within them: "By the same word the heavens and earth that now exist have been stored up for fire, being kept until the day of Judgement and destruction of the unGodly men." (2 Peter 3:7, 10 & 12 RSV) Had it meant that earth's elements* were to be completely destroyed in a literal sense, no living thing could survive. But as we can see, that is not what is meant: "But we have His promise, and look forward to new heavens and a new earth, the home of justice." (2 Peter 3:13 NEB).
"Since all these things are thus to
be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and
Godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the Day of God".
(From 3:11,12
RSV).
The Justice of God has to be
learned in order for it to be handed down through the generations of the
"new earth". The souls of Noah and his family were saved by means of the
ark, and after the floodwaters of God had disposed of the sons of disobedience,
they were able to begin a righteous life in the new earth of that time without
hindrance. Similarly, but by means of "justice in full flood",
Jehovah will flood out the rebellious spirits of all apostates and other
"sons of disobedience" to leave remaining a "great crowd"
of spiritually refined worshippers living according to the "Way of
Holiness". (Isaiah 10:22 NEB. Rev 7:9,10)
