Woe to those living close by who do not succumb, for not only do they become objects of injurious slander, but after a gossip's spouse is informed, the spouse may add to the output of the gossip mill.  Those absent from these gatherings are the ones defamed, but as soon as they put in an appearance, other absentees are made the victims.

The wives of two neighbours I knew would begin their pernicious gossip with just one listener. But after much to and froing (and tit-bits added to titillate new arrivals) they had their lounge seating and standing room occupied within the hour. Their gossip was usually about those absent but on their way to the house. Anyone refusing to attend, or delaying their arrival for daily cups brimful with gossip, were, in the days that followed, cut out of the loop until they returned to the fold for further cupfuls of vicious rumour     until the light within them grew dark by midday, everyday.

THE "FOREIGN WOMAN".

Aha! The "foreign woman" and her wiles, (104)
Depriving men of their spirit creation,
With subtle consolations she covers over
the discipline of man     and his need.

You delay his maturity to prolong your love?
Happy the man that says:  "I reject your
gifts that betray     the veils over my heart.
Now I can enjoy the muscles of my face."

Although rare, enjoyable conversation can be found among principled people     caring souls whose discourse confers benefit and joy to one's heart and mind, and even prompts self-scrutiny. Good  conversation is found among those who reject the injurious schemes of gossipers forging antisocial weapons to ensnare and injure the unwary. Discreet ones steer clear of the fabricators of wild unsubstantiated rumour that is of benefit to no one. Of such offenders, Godly men and women take their leave. They avoid those motivated by a malicious desire to promote a debauched existence.

Pleasurable, are intimate conversations with wise parents who live according to the Will of God.  For they speak less from inherited self-will, and more in harmony with the Sovereign good     for their offspring and themselves.  Yes, rare indeed!

Through verbal discourse we may acquire knowledge of another's motives and assess their spiritual need. (Though in far a greater sense, The Christ assessed Paul's spiritual need, and temporarily blinded him to bring him to his senses. Acts 9:1-16).  Few are they who recognize how Christian love should be administered.
