FAMINES.

"IT WAS ON THE LORD'S DAY".  (Rev 1:10 NEB).
"And I saw, and, look! a pale horse; and the one seated upon it had the name Death. And  Ha'des was closely following him. And authority was given them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with a long sword and with food shortage (famine. (1) NEB) and with deadly plague…"  (From Rev 6:8).

"And there, as I looked, was a black horse; and its rider held in his hand a pair of  scales. And I heard what sounded like a voice… which said, "A whole day's wage  for a quart of flour, a whole day's wage for three quarts of barley-meal!"  (From Rev 6:5,6 NEB).

"There will be great earthquakes, and famines (food shortages. NWT) and plagues in many places;  in the sky terrors and great portents."  (Luke 21:11 NEB).

"With all these things the birth-pangs (pangs of distress. NWT) of the new age begin."  (From Matt 24:7,8 NEB).

"…women will mourn because they have no husbands, their daughters will mourn because  they  have no one to support them… the husbands wiped out by the famine."  (From 2 Esdras 16:33,34 NEB).

Therefore: "'Come out of ("Babylon"), My people, lest you take part in her sins and share in her plagues… plagues shall strike her in a single day    pestilence, bereavement, famine, and  burning    for mighty is the Lord God who has pronounced her doom!'"  (From Rev 18:4,8 NEB).

SCOURGES ARE TO TEACH MEN BETTER WAYS.
"A man will violently assault his neighbour's house and plunder his goods; no  pity  will  restrain him, when he is in the grip of famine and grinding misery."  (2 Esdras 15:19 NEB).

"Alas, alas for me! Who will rescue me on that day? When troubles come, many will groan; when  famine strikes, many will die; when wars break out, empires will tremble; when the calamities come, all will be filled with terror. What will men do then, in the face of calamity? Famine and plague, suffering and hardship, are scourges sent to teach men better ways. But even so they will not abandon their crimes, nor keep in mind their scourging. A time will come when food grows cheap, so cheap that they will imagine they have been sent peace and prosperity. But at that very moment the earth will become a hotbed of disasters     sword,  famine, and anarchy. Most  of its inhabitants will die in the famine; and those who survive the famine will be destroyed by the sword. The dead will be tossed out like dung, and there will be no one to offer any comfort. For the earth will be left empty and its cities a ruin."  (2 Esdras 16:17  23 NEB).

THE NILE OF ETHIOPIA AND EGYPT SHALL DRY UP.
"The waters of the Nile shall drain away, the river shall be parched and run dry; its channels shall stink, the streams of Egypt shall be parched and dry up; reeds and rushes shall wither away; the lotus too beside the Nile and all that is sown along the Nile shall dry up, shall be blown away and vanish. The fishermen shall groan and lament, all who cast their hooks into the Nile and those who spread nets on the water… There shall be nothing in Egypt that any man can do, head or tail, palm or rush."  (Isaiah 19:5-8 & 15 NEB.  See 18:1-7).
