HUSBANDS AND WIVES.

666L.

"It is my desire, therefore, that everywhere prayers be said by the men of the congregation, who shall lift up their hands with a pure intention, excluding angry or quarrelsome thoughts. Women again must dress in becoming manner, modestly and soberly, not with elaborate hair-styles, not decked out with gold or pearls, or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, as befits women who claim to be religious. A woman must be a learner, listening quietly and with due submission. I do not permit a woman to be a teacher, nor must woman domineer over man; she should be quiet. For Adam was created first, and Eve afterwards; and it was not Adam who was deceived; it was the woman who, yielding to deception, fell into sin. Yet she will be saved through motherhood     if only women continue in faith,  love,  and holiness, with a sober mind."  (1 Tim 2:8 15 NEB)  (See NWT).

"In like manner, you wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, in order that, if any are not obedient to the Word, they may be won without a word through the conduct of their wives, because of having been eyewitnesses of your chaste conduct together with deep respect. And do not let your adornment be that of the external braiding of the hair and of the putting on of gold ornaments or the wearing of outer garments, but let it be the secret person of the heart in the incorruptible apparel of the quiet and mild spirit, which is of great value in the eyes of God. For so, too, formerly the holy women who were hoping in God used to adorn themselves, subjecting themselves to their own husbands, as Sarah used to obey Abraham, calling him "lord"… You husbands, continue dwelling in like manner with them according to knowledge, assigning them honour as to a weaker vessel, the feminine one, since you are also heirs with them of the undeserved favour of life, in order for your prayers not to be hindered."  (1 Peter 3:1-7)  (As a reminder see 1 Tim 2:12).

"…Let the husband render to his wife her due; but let the wife also do likewise to her husband. The wife does not exercise authority over her own body, but her husband does; likewise, also, the husband does not exercise authority over his own body, but his wife does… To the married people I give instructions, yet not I but the Lord, that a wife should not depart from her husband; but if she should actually depart, let her remain unmarried or else make up again with her husband; and a husband should not leave his wife. But to the others I say, yes, I, not the Lord: If any brother has an unbelieving wife, and yet she is agreeable to living with him, let him not leave her; and a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and yet he is agreeable to dwelling with her, let her not leave her husband. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in relation to his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in relation to the brother; otherwise, your children would really be unclean, but now they are holy. But if the unbelieving one proceeds to depart, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not in servitude under such  circumstances, but God has called you to peace."  (From 1 Cor 7:1-16).

"…Let wives be in subjection to their husbands as to the Lord, because a husband is head of his wife as The Christ also is head of the congregation… Husbands, continue loving your wives, just as The Christ also loved the congregation and delivered himself up for it… In this way husbands ought to be loving their wives as their own bodies… Nevertheless, also, let each one of you individually so love his wife as he does himself; on the other hand, the wife should have deep respect for her husband."  (From Eph 5:21-33).
